Popular instant messaging app, Whatsapp has announced that it is limiting all its members to forwarding any single message up to five times in their bid to fight the widespread of false information on the platform.

The Facebook-owned app had already implemented this six months ago in India after a number of mob lynchings were blamed on fake reports spread via the popular instant messaging app.

The restriction comes at a time WhatsApp and Facebook are under scrutiny for their role in the spread of propaganda and other untruths online. The update was announced at an event in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to Whatsapp, the decision was made after “carefully” evaluating the results of its half-year-long test in the country.

A Whatsapp spokeswoman said;

“This will help keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts. We’ll continue to listen to user feedback about their experience, and over time, look for new ways of addressing viral content.”

Previously the global limit was 20 chats. Only India had a 5 chat limit, which has now been extended globally.
